I was invited to deliver the inaugural address at the workshop “Life in Literature – ENLITE 2013,” organized by the Department of English, MASS College of Arts & Science, Kumbakonam. My lecture, titled “The Futurity of an English Literature Student,” focused on the evolving role of English literature graduates in a rapidly changing global academic and professional landscape.
The session encouraged students to view the study of literature as more than an academic discipline. It highlighted how literary education develops communication skills, critical thinking, creativity, cultural awareness, ethical sensitivity, and lifelong learning—qualities that prepare graduates for diverse careers in education, research, media, communication, civil services, and other professional fields.
The lecture also motivated students to approach literary studies with confidence, recognizing that the value of literature lies not only in understanding texts but also in developing the intellectual and personal qualities required to make meaningful contributions to society.
